The Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing
FSMFN provides advanced educational preparation for nurses who seek to become nurse-midwives (CNM), family nurse practitioners (FNP), or women’s health care nurse practitioners (WHCNP) by providing a community-based distance graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) a post-master’s certificate or a Doctor of Nursing Practice. The FSMFN seeks to meet the needs of prospective nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners who do not want to leave their home communities to obtain the graduate education they desire to fulfill their professional aspirations. Didactic coursework is delivered using web-based, distance education courses allowing students to achieve their higher education goals without leaving home for classes. Using clinics, hospitals, and preceptors in their own community allows students to get the hands-on clinical experience required for these exciting health care professions. Two on-campus sessions are required, including an orientation prior to beginning studies, and intensive skill workshops prior to beginning the clinical practicum.

The Florida School of Traditional Midwifery (FSTM) offers direct-entry midwifery educational programs which combine the art of traditional midwifery with today’s knowledge of medical science. Direct-entry refers to the European tradition where the majority of midwives enter directly into midwifery education, where nursing is not a prerequisite. Our Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery program takes the student step by step through the acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary to practice as a direct entry midwife. Upon completion, students receive a diploma and are eligible to apply to the State of Florida for licensure and to North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) for national certification as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).

Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery
Nizhoni is a Navajo word which conveys the spirit and practice of “the beauty way” as experienced and expressed through living in balance and harmony with the world. As midwives and students, we seek that balance as we honor both our valued birthing traditions and contemporary midwifery and medical knowledge. Graduates of the Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery are prepared to function as primary care providers for women throughout the childbearing cycle. As midwives, we bring harmony and balance to the work of labor and assist each woman to discover the transformative nature and experience of giving birth. As an institution providing midwifery education, we create and foster a strong commitment to excellence in midwifery practice in any given place or circumstance, once again honoring the practice of Nizhoni.
